WELD ENGINEER, CWI

Job Summary

  • The Weld Advisor will develop welding processes & procedures, require welding certifications and monitor production activities to ensure customer demands are met on time.

  • Full knowledge and supportive skills - Weld Expert – Technical Advisory.

  • Welding is the process of determining the time, tasks, and resources required to complete the job on time.

Duties and Responsibilities

This description represents the most significant job duties but does not exclude other work duties assigned or required but not mentioned.  

  1. Welding Engineering & Process Development
    - Establish, optimize, and standardize welding procedures and practices aligned with project requirements, codes, and materials.
    - Develop and qualify WPSs, PQRs, and WPQs per AWS, ASME, API, and MIL standards.

    - Develop any robotic welding documents/procedures needed.

    - Development of all in house weld coupon evaluation procedures and enforcement.

    - Implement efficient, repeatable welding processes that drive quality and productivity utilizing CWS knowledge base.

    - Provide insight for product design and fabrication teams with input on joint design, material/filler selection, and manufacturability/ weldability.

  2. Quality Assurance, Inspection Oversight & Compliance
    - Ensure all welding activities meet internal quality standards, customer requirements, and applicable codes.
    - Provide CWI-level inspection oversight, both in-house and at vendor locations (if applicable).

    - Assist with maintaining and improving the welding portion of the QMS, including audits and corrective actions.

    - Assist with compliance with ISO 9001 and other quality systems and all applicable welding codes, standards & third-party engineering standards.

  3. Leadership, Mentorship & Workforce Development
    - Deliver technical leadership and training to welding personnel, inspectors, and cross-functional teams.
    - Mentor welders, QA staff & other CIT staff in code interpretation, best practices, and inspection techniques.

    - Develop in-house training programs and qualification processes to support evolving project & staff needs.

    - Collaborate with departments to establish training schedules and plans that allocate available resources to best serve customer needs.

    - Initial welder interview/testing for new hires.

    - Identify training needs and ensure that training is obtained.

    - Make sure that employees are trained and understand and follow operating procedures.

    - Demonstrate equipment operations, work, and safety procedures to new employees, or assign employees to experienced workers for training.

    - Promote a culture of teamwork, accountability, safety, and technical excellence.

  4. Welding Project Management & Cross-Functional Coordination

    - Lead welding focused projects from planning through execution, while ensuring alignment with quality, customer requirements and assisting with alignment to production schedules.

    - Manage all welding-related aspects of projects including documentation, resourcing, and technical oversight, and assisting leadership with planning/ project management.

    - Conduct pre-job reviews addressing codes, procedures, customer specifications and quality requirements.

    - Collaborate with engineering, QA, production, and client teams to ensure timely, compliant project delivery.

    - Serves as a primary point of contact with manufacturing departments.

    - Communicate with the Manufacturing, Purchasing and Sales team to ensure timelines and expectations are met.

Authority

Employees are required to follow procedures, work instructions and operational processes. The potential consequences for non-compliance may result in an increased rejection rate at the Customer, increased internal scrap rate, delayed or late shipments, personal injury, and a negative impact on the environment.

All employees have the authority to stop production and contain nonconforming products. Significant quantities of nonconformances must be reported immediately to management.

This position requires no supervisory responsibilities.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.

  • Thorough understanding of the business and supply chain.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Extremely proficient with production planning systems, such as MRP.

  • Computer skills are necessary for the job and knowledge of Manufacturing Resource Planning (MRP) is essential to manufacturing planning.

  • Related experience beneficial.

  • Previous experience working in MRP system.

Working Conditions / Environment

This job operates in a professional environment.

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is occasionally exposed to loud noise, fumes and airborne particles, moving mechanical parts and vibration; may work with or around chemicals that create a hazardous exposure which is defined on the accessible Safety Data Sheets; employee is exposed to moderate temperature changes over an eight-hour shift.

  • Being a good communicator is important because you'll be coordinating with different departments to ensure the manufacturing process runs smoothly. Being able to manage your time well and work under pressure is also important, as this is a job with tight deadlines.

  • Less than 20% travel is expected with this position.
